Sonchus acaulis (Giant milk thistle; giant sow thistle)
Fantastic sculptural, bone hardy sonchus from the Canary Islands where it is found growing on stony soils. Unlike many of the other Sonchus species it doesn't get too big, only 1m wide approx and similar height, so suits smaller gardens. Develops a rosette of basal foliage from which sprouts the golden yellow daisy like flowers in late spring to early summer. Easy to grow, just keep it away from clay. Full sun to afternoon shade in really hot areas.
